Sheri mentioned that "life is a test, albeit an open book test." The scriptures and many other aspects of life really make it an open book test, but it is up to us to look up the answers. As the scriptures themselves testify "Seek and we shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you" (D&C 4:7). We can even be relieved from many of our vast wanderings and struggles by simply asking our heavenly father through prayer. So it is an open book test with someone guiding us to the answers. As I sit here and write this I am struck by life's simplicity. It's usually us, our pride, that makes everything about it difficult. I am brought to question why don't we just believe as the savior has counseled, obey, and follow him? Life is so much easier as we trust in him and, without stress, work diligently in his service.

Elder Holland - Amazing Words

Speaking to the BYU Idaho graduates of December 2011 Elder Holland said"“Don’t you dare just go blend into the amoral, telestial, hard-scrabble world of today. Mckay

Elder Neal L. Andersen recently gave an address about educating our desires. He said “For me, a desire is a conscious, private longing for which each person is responsible ... It is a powerful hope, a quiet, soul-felt anticipation originating from that sovereign territory we each possess. We are all influenced by our families [and] our culture, and yet I believe there is a place inside of us that we uniquely and individually control and create. These desires are being constructed or developed, fortified or weakened constantly, whether they are righteous or unrighteous.”He spoke about educating our desires is such a way that we become what our heavenly father wants us to become. He also said "I have come to understand that before choices, come our desires. Our desires influence our choices. Because many of our thoughts are private, protected, and hidden from view, our actions for a time may not always reflect our inner desires. However, eventually, our inner desires are given life and they are seen in our choices and in our actions.”We can educate our desires he said by identifying what we truly and absolutely believe in.It was David O. Mckay (1873-1970) who said “The greatest battles of life are fought … within the silent chambers of the soul.”He also listed two basic obstacles the first being the Love of Money and he quoted Jacob 2:17 “But before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the kingdom of God”The second was concerning the troubles marriages are having today with some people listing as their reason for divorce as just being unhappy, rationalizing divorce by saying don't I deserve to be happy. He followed this concern with, “Choose a companion carefully and prayerfully; and when you are married, be fiercely loyal to one another. … Choose your love; and love your choice.” Love is always going to be a choice, and we must make that choice. I couldn't agree more with Elder Andersen we need to educate our desires in order to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ and follow his plan for us.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nathancorry.blogspot.com/2011/12/greatest-battles-of-life-are-fought.html' title='“The greatest battles of life are fought … within the silent chambers of the soul.” - David O. There are a variety of normative ethical approaches people consider when deciding to act when faced with an ethical dilemma. Included among these approaches is deontology, consequentialism, pragmatism, and virtue ethics (Normative Ethics, 2011). Considering each approach can yield important information, relevant to any ethical dilemma, but unique in how the ethical situation is viewed. This is true of the all encompassing nature of virtue ethics. This approach also addresses the overall satisfaction of the decision maker, and enhances that satisfaction with every correct choice they make. Many people rely on ethical principles to instruct them on how to respond to two prevalent questions: “What should I do?” and “How should I act?” Ethics then provides us with principles and rules to guide our actions in answering those two questions. One such principle is, “everyone is obligated to do whatever will achieve the greatest good for the greatest number” (Andre, Claire, 1988). This is basic utilitarianism, which fits under the consequentialist realm of ethics. Another widely held principle is one established by Immanuel Kant. He was referenced as stating, “everyone is obligated to act only in ways that respect the human dignity and moral rights of all persons” (Andre, Claire, 1988). Kant’s principle is representative of a basic deontology. Basing one’s decisions on principles such as these, one could come to a conclusion about what to do or how to act given a certain situation. These principles can guide a person when faced with difficult decisions. While it is important for us to develop and utilize these moral principles, many people are looking deeper at another ethical question. That is, “What kind of person should I be?” This is the question many consider when consulting the virtue approach to ethical decision making. It requires that one make their decisions based on specific virtues like: courage, honesty, kindness, loyalty, gratitude, charity, and being forgiving. A virtuous person would also eschew vices like: cowardice, dishonesty, unkindness, disloyalty, ingratitude, being uncharitable, and being unforgiving. There are many other virtues as well as their corresponding vices (Beckner, Weldon, 2004). Caring for others also takes a prominent role in the virtue approach to ethical decision making. Applying the virtue approach to any ethical decision involves pondering what actions should be taken or would be taken by the most virtuous person you can imagine. You make your choices based on the kind of person you are and should be. Because what some people consider virtuous is not the same as what other people consider virtuous people often differ in the choices they make when consulting virtue ethics. Notwithstanding the differences in opinion that exist there are many virtues, like those mentioned above, on which almost every nation, culture, and people agree with and value, though their understanding of those virtues often differs as well. The consensus builders tend to focus on what people can agree with, while other individuals strive to advance their own agenda, believing that it is for the best. So what are virtues? "Virtues are attitudes, dispositions, or character traits that enable us to be and to act in ways that develop” our potential to be and act virtuously (Andre, Clair, 1988). “Possessing a virtue is a matter of degree, for most people who can be truly described as fairly virtuous … still have their blind spots — little areas where they do not act for the reasons one would expect” (Hursthouse, Rosalind, 2010). Because all people have a varying disposition with regards to, and understanding of, virtues some people make better choices than others. “A virtue such as honesty or generosity is not just a tendency to do what is honest or generous, nor is it to be helpfully specified as a ‘desirable’ or ‘morally valuable’ character trait. It is, indeed a character trait — that is, a disposition which is well entrenched in its possessor, something that, as we say ‘goes all the way down’ ” (Hursthouse, R., 2010). For a virtue to hold an important role in making correct decisions it must “go all the way down”, or be understood thoroughly. We must resist the temptation to neglect the value of virtue in making our decisions. One of the most important aspects of virtue ethics is the wholehearted acceptance of a full range of considerations. It takes a deep look at how one chooses to act and for what reasons. For example, an honest person cannot be simply be identified by one aspect alone. One who is honest in ones business dealings, must also be honest in every other way possible way to truly be considered honest. An honest person is much more than one who practices one honest principle. An honest person will choose to be honest because that is the kind of person they want to be. One must not choose to be honest simply because that is what is stated by a principle or because it is in ones best interest to act honestly (Hursthouse, R., 2010). This is a very prevalent misconception about virtues. Many times people define virtues with statements of principle, but usually the principle only addresses one aspect of the virtue. Individuals, who do this, really miss the bigger picture. People fail to internalized virtues when limiting the virtue to a principle. This occurs often when individuals justify themselves because they have satisfied one element of honesty, and yet they are neglecting the fullness of the virtue. This is really how virtue ethics differs from deontology and teleology–it encompasses the whole person, one’s being and nature, and not just some specific principles one adheres too. One might argue, however, that labeling a virtue in and of itself is a statement of principle, but internalizing that virtue is far more rewarding than simply following a statement of principle. It becomes a part of who one is and helps define one’s character. Encouraging and internalizing virtues like honesty can help anyone make correct choices.A virtues influence in our public schoolsJust the other day in my seventh grade class I caught a student cheating on a quiz. He was copying the answers from his neighbor, and his neighbor was allowing this to happen. When I saw what was happening I challenged the behavior. The first student promptly lied about it, refusing to acknowledge that he was cheating. He frantically turned to his friend for another voice of justification, fully expecting his friend would lie as well. His friend was inspired by the virtue of honesty and when asked about the situation he acknowledged the truth. In this example both students were aware of the virtue of honesty, but one neglected it and the other honored it to some degree. The virtue of generosity also plays a role in our schools. Each year at Timberline Middle School the student council organizes a fundraiser in which many students, parents, teachers, and community organizations donate to a cause. This gives each participant an opportunity to practice the virtue of generosity, and at the same time support a good cause. The past couple of year’s students at the school have raised money to grant a wish to a child who has experienced a life threatening medical condition. This year the school raised around $9,000.00 to support a school in Kenya. As I have been involved in the fundraiser, I have noted the influence a teacher can have over students and the value they place on the virtue of generosity. The student council usually organizes a classroom competition, which generates some enthusiasm. Teachers also compete against each other to raise the most money between their individual classes, and each class individually competes against all of the other classes. The desire some children have to donate money to the cause can certainly be attributed in part, to the value of generosity that they hold towards the school in Kenya. Sometimes however the students and teachers generosity can be attributed to the competitive nature of the fundraiser. I’m sure the fact that the top three classes get an ice cream party and the grade that raises the most money gets to be excused from classes during one day to watch a movie has some significant impact on the level of generosity shown. The student council also comes up with creative strategies to fuel the fundraiser. The past couple years the student council has allowed students to purchase blue or red stars, supporting BYU or U of U. Students sign the star and it is placed in one of the windows by the lunch room. Many of the students are fiercely loyal to their team and spend a great deal of money supporting their pride, and also donating to the cause. It’s always a close competition. We can certainly differentiate this type of competitive generosity from that generosity manifested by those who simply give because they want to help. It’s evident who really has internalized the virtue. The question one considers in the virtue approach of ethical decision making is, “what kind of person should I be?” It is clear that those who give simply because they have the resources to give are generous people. On the other hand those who give because of a competition may simply be defined as competitive people, motivated to give when given a competitive reason. So what kind of person should one be? An administrator also needs to ask themselves this question. Administrators are asked to make tough decisions. These decisions define who the administrator is, and how deeply he or she has internalized ethical virtues. The decisions made also impact the community surrounding the school, and the community will form opinions about the administrator based upon the virtues they perceive the administrator holds dear and how they differ from their own. Some of those decisions an administrator makes are easy to make. They may be prescribed by specific district policy. They may also be decisions in which the administrator has no conflicting opinions. Other decisions will involve controversial issues in which there is considerable disagreement in the community and within the district. An administrator’s decision about any specific issue will affect the lives, rights, and privileges of many people. This makes it increasingly important for an administrator to make their decisions on a solid virtuous foundation and appeal unto virtues for the support they need from the community. One example is that of censorship. Censorship is “the suppression or proscription of speech or writing that is deemed obscene, indecent, or unduly controversial” (Free Dictionary, 2011). So what kinds of materials should a principal censor? How are they to decide what to censor? If a principal censors specific types of media what kind of person does that make him or her? If any book or form of media is censored the principal must provide a specific reason. Most books that are banned at a school are banned for what they portray or communicate to their audience, or for what they teach students. Many times material is banned because students are too young and should be protected from such material. One principle in opposition to censorship many people reflect upon is basic human right. It addresses the importance of intellectual freedom. It specifically states that “everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers” (Intellectual Freedom, 2011). Though this basic human right appears to be in direct conflict with the principle of censorship, most people support some forms of censorship. The reasons and “rationales for censorship have varied, with some censors targeting material deemed to be indecent or obscene; heretical or blasphemous; or seditious or treasonous” (Global Internet Liberty Campaign (GILC), 2011). Most social institutions censor some things, whether those institutions are schools, businesses, or one’s own family, and it is done to protect the social institution from what is determined evil, hurtful, indecent, or unrefined. In the realm of virtue ethics one might conclude that censorship fits in perfectly, seeing how social institutions censor to eschew the vices of our society. Individuals also self censor every day to avoid such vices (GILC). As a school administrator, one must carefully identify a line between what could be painfully hurtful to students and what he or she must allow to provide for the students’ education. To some degree, the administrator must respect students’ rights to intellectual freedom and exploration, and yet still maintain an effort to reduce the risk of having students fall prey to some of the vices society creates.“The United States Supreme Court has ruled that there are certain narrow categories of speech that are not protected by the First Amendment: obscenity, child pornography, defamation, and ‘fighting words,’ or speech that incites immediate and imminent lawless action” (American Library Association (ALA), 2011). If, for example, there is a book in a school library that teaches children to be dishonest, to deceive, and take advantage of other people, such a book would be a good candidate for censorship, because it may be determined that such a book “incites immediate and imminent lawless action” (ALA, 2011). Principals can seek guidance from such rulings as they consider what to censor. One common form of censorship in schools is a dress code policy. Believing that our society ought to maintain some standard of dress, all schools enforce a dress code of one form or another. At Timberline Middle School, the administration has set in place a dress code and the following reason is given as support for it: “students' dress and appearance should be conducive to a positive and appropriate learning environment” (Timberline, 2011). The dress code, among other things, restricts the clothing and hairstyles students may come to school with. It also restricts the ideas expressed on their clothing. Any clothing bearing “vulgar, suggestive, profane or obscene pictures, slogans or language, as well as clothing bearing pictures, or advertisements for alcohol, tobacco, or drugs are not to be worn at school” (Timberline, 2011). In order for a dress code policy to take any real effect, the administration must be prepared to enforce the policy. Once a policy is established it is only as good as its implementation. The majority of the community of Timberline Middle School welcomes the dress code policy, because it supports their values, but there are still violations of the policy every day. The administration has hired a full time security position, during school hours, to enforce school policies. Even with this extra hire, if a parent challenges the policy, the administrator needs to be prepared to defend it, and may do so referencing the virtues that such a policy upholds for the community.A dress code may be used to improve the positive learning environment of the school through the prevention of what is considered vulgarity, profanity, and obscenity. These are all commonly recognized vices and quite the opposite of what is considered of good taste, refined, respectful, benevolent, moral, and virtuous. One can certainly see the role the virtue approach to ethical decision making plays in the creation of a dress code policy. One must also recognize that there will always be a variety of opinions regarding what is considered vulgar, profane, obscene, immoral, or in any way inappropriate for the school setting, and so these decisions regarding a dress code can become quiet controversial. Lone Peak High School, for example, does not hold the same dress standards as does its feeder school, Timberline Middle School. Students at Loan Peak for example can wear clothing with holes. Some students are quiet happy with this difference, while others, usually the less vocal students, would prefer the higher standard of dress.School administrators must prepare themselves for the many stressful situations that can occur on the job. They are required to be leaders in the community, and as such, are expected to set a good example, possessing a variety of virtues. An administrator must be able to withstand public scrutiny. An administrator’s performance is usually scrutinized based on the success he or she can demonstrate to the community, his or her overall work ethic, as well as the virtues he or she practices. Many people believe a leader, like an administrator, should be the first one to work and the last one to leave. Administrators are not without some imperfections in character, but through practice and experience it is expected one will improve as the years go by. Some of the pressures an administrator faces in the school setting require a great deal of commitment, preparation, and discipline. Indeed administrators are generally thought of as quiet decent people. If an administrator can consistently make correct choices he or she will be recognized as a good leader. When an administrator makes a mistake other people will likely voice their opinion about the administrator’s poor performance. An administrator must be attentive to quickly recover from any mistakes because bad situations can quickly become worse. This is especially true if the administrator immature about those mistakes and was to give into vices, like selfishness and ignorance. Any person could make a poor choice if one acts rashly, failing to consider the whole picture and ramifications to all constituents. So it is important for an administrator to discipline oneself to seek the best solution. One must be an excellent critical thinker. If the administrator adheres to the virtues described by virtue ethics he or she will be better off in making many of his or her decisions–whatever they may be. Another example of how an administrator can get into a sticky situation with parents is the enforcement of school-wide policies. Most schools have a variety of school wide policies and procedures they follow to improve the overall student experience. A common one is a school wide nuisance item policy. In creating a nuisance item policy the administration of a school must consider what items should be classified as nuisance items and how and when to ban them. At Timberline Middle School, cell phones are banned throughout the school day. This includes during lunch. Many parents who disagree with the policy argue that their children should be able to use their cell phone especially in an emergency. Some argue that not sending their students to school with their phone could compromise their safety. Not having a way to reach their student if a disaster were to happen would not be acceptable. There certainly is some merit to the parents’ arguments. After all, who can argue that having a cell phone under extreme circumstances wouldn’t be helpful? Imagine if a child were trapped in an enclosed space at the school after a severe earthquake. Most people would hope the student had a cell phone to call and notify their family that they were still alive? Currently the nuisance item policy at Timberline Middle School states that such items which are “disruptive to the educational process are not to be brought to school” (Hill, 2011). This statement includes items even if they are off. Following that statement, speaking about the policy enforcement, it is stated that, “these items will be confiscated if they are being used from 8:10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m” (Hill, 2011). If students simply don’t use these items they won’t be confiscated. The policy shows a little leniency in its enforcement. This not only entrusts the students with the virtue of responsibility, seeing how they can bring a cell phone to school so long as they respect the policy, but it will also quail some of the parent fears regarding the policy, knowing that if there student are responsible with their cell phones they may bring them to school without penalty. The consequences for breaking the nuisance item policy are heavier with each successive violation of the policy. With a first offence, the item is taken away, but students can pick it up at the end of the school day at the office. Upon a second offence, the student’s parent must come to the school and pick up the item from an administrator, and together the administration and the parents will determine what the consequences will be if there is a third offence. If there is a third offence it may even be considered insubordination (Hill, 2011). How is this approach to administering a nuisance item policy supported through virtue ethics? It gives students an opportunity to practice responsibility and it respects the view point of the many parents who want their children to be safe at school. It has also considered those extreme situations, such as natural disasters. The policy also protects student privacy. After taking a nuisance item away from students the teacher or aide, whoever is in possession of the nuisance item, is also not to browse the electronic device which has been confiscated. This also demonstrates the administrations commitment to student privacy. Making ethical choices is important not only for school administrators, but for everyone. Hopefully this paper has helped the reader understand some of the decisions school administrators are asked to make, how people in general have differing ethical concepts, and how one can chose to seek understanding through an ethical approach like the virtue approach to help in making those difficult decisions. In researching this topic it has become clear that developing ones knowledge of virtues, and using the virtue approach to ethical decision making has a lot in common with the process one must go through to become a critical thinker. Developing virtues and improving one’s thinking process requires diligent work. One must consider the influence various choices may have on all parties involved. An administrator must consider the impact school policies have on the student, teachers and staff, and community members. It is through careful examination of the choices one is given, and the outcome of those choices, both for those involved and for the one making the choice, that one is truly able to come to an ethical decision. ReferencesAmerican Library Association (ALA). Weather one is offended at a specific person, organization, or idea. Many times taking an offensive position regarding a false idea or concept is justified, but to hold a grudge against someone is never justified. Hopefully people avoid taking offense to what is true or good. Being human we often make mistakes in judgement, and even withhold our love from our neighbor, taking offense because of specifics and often very small things. If we possessed the gift of charity to such a degree to avoid taking offense to other peoples well intentioned actions, especially when no offense was intended, or the very small things that are rather meaningless considering the overall picture, than we and those we are around would be happier people. The savior gave us some interesting lessons about taking offense. He stated in Luke 7:23 “Blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me”.He also warned his apostles before he went to the garden of Gethsemane in Matthew 26:31 "Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night." Peter answered in verse 33 "Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended." Yet even peter denied the Lord thrice as the savior prophesied, and in verse 56 we learn that "all the disciples forsook him, and fled." How much truth can any mortal man bare. Christ knew the disciples were not prepared for what was to come at the end of his mortal ministry. In Alma 35:15 Alma saw that "the hearts of the people began to wax hard, and that they began to be offended because of the strictness of the word." Is the strictness of the word to strict for some to bare right now. Doctrine and Covenants 88:22 states that "he who is not able to abide the law of a celestial kingdom cannot abide a celestial glory." Is the law of the celestial kingdom going to be too strict for some to abide it. Would they take offense at the law of the celestial kingdom. I certainly hope not. Speaking of how we should treat one another Elder Maxwell encourages us not to be offended because of others weaknesses. He said "unremembered by some is the reality that in the kingdom we are each other’s clinical material; the Lord allows us to practice on each other, even in our imperfections. And each of us knows what it is like to be worked on by a “student” rather than a senior surgeon. Each of us, however unintentionally, has also inflicted some pain."Elder David A. Bednar said "When we believe or say we have been offended, we usually mean we feel insulted, mistreated, snubbed, or disrespected. And certainly clumsy, embarrassing, unprincipled, and mean-spirited things do occur in our interactions with other people that would allow us to take offense. However, it ultimately is impossible for another person to offend you or to offend me. Indeed, believing that another person offended us is fundamentally false. To be offended is a choice we make; it is not a condition inflicted or imposed upon us by someone or something else."“Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them” (Psalm 119:165)We are told in the latter days that "then shall many be offended" JS—M 1:8Hopefully we do not find ourselves in this category to often and for very long. It only creates misery for everyone involved.

"Come Unto Me" - Jesus Christ

I was recently inspired while reading the Book of Mormon, I know big coincidence right. In 3rd Nephi Chapter 18, verse 25, our savior Jesus Christ give the commandment to "come unto me", but it is phrased a little different in this verse then in others that I have seen."And ye see that i have commanded that non of you should go away, but rather have commanded that ye should come unto me, that ye might feel and see: even so shall ye do unto the world: and whosoever breaketh this commandment suffereth himself to be led into temptation."The command to "come unto me" is a sweeping commandment, very inclusive and relevant in all stages of our lives during mortality. We always need to be heading into the direct of our savior or as he has put it we suffer ourselves "to be led into temptation." In the moment we turn away from following the savior, coming unto him we fall to temptation. He is the life and light of the world, the beginning and the end, he is the redemption of mankind. In and only through him can we be saved. He is our perfect example, the pattern of perfection, his words are life. We truly have every reason to come unto him and be saved.

Our Mortal Mission

This past General Conference Elder W. Christopher Waddell spoke about serving missions. Among his statements he said, "Long before leaving our earthly home to serve a full-time mission, we left heavenly parents to fulfill our mortal mission."All of us have a uniquely personal mortal mission to fulfill while we are here on earth. Just as John the Baptist's mission differed from Jesus Christ's, our missions differ one from another. But we each have a mission to fulfill given us by our Heavenly Father. We can find great purpose in this doctrine. So long as we are yet alive we have work to do to accomplish the purposes God has for us. God knows us, our weaknesses, strengths, and he love each of us with a perfect love. I believe as we look unto him he will guide us in order to fulfill our earthly missions. I have found in marriage and family life I am expected to not only fulfill my mission, but to help my spouse and children fulfill theirs. I am reminded of Nephi who was commanded to build a ship, but in order to fulfill this commandment he needed the help of his older brothers Laman and Lemuel. Out of the hardness of their hearts they initially mocked Nephi for thinking he could build a ship. They doubted his ability and refused to help. It wasn't until they were humbled before the Lord that they submitted their assistance. In a similar way we are asked to help others build their ship or fulfill their mission on earth. We are asked to help the Lord fulfill his mission. Let us not be like Laman and Lemuel, but let us give our hearts and minds over to the Lords work. It is my testimony that as we help the Lord and others fulfill their earthly missions we will be blessed, we will grow in light and truth, we will be given the spirit to assist us, and we will be happy through it all.

A Quote from Elder Bernard P. Brockbank - 1972

In a talk given in 1972 Bernard P. Brockbank made the following statement about the latter day saint children. "Now, just a word about what is happening in the world and going on among our children. They are being deceived, and that which is entirely wrong looks to be right because so many fine people indulge in use of these two destroyers [alcohol and tobacco] of the divine nature within man and their respect for God." Upon reading this quote as I prepared the Family Home Evening lesson this past Monday I found it to be strikingly true for our day and age. It may not be that the general membership of the church is promoting the use of alcohol and tobacco, but their are many other things that fine members are promoting which are as Elder Brockbank put it, "entirely wrong." Many fine members of the church, in their own ignorance or deception, make many things which are wrong appear acceptable. Many fine members entertain themselves with what is wrong. As John Bytheway put it they are "paying the devil for lessons." It appears many people are not willing to do what it takes to go against the grain, and make social sacrifices for the sake of doing what is right. I believe if they did this world would be a better place, and no doubt faith in God would increase.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nathancorry.blogspot.com/2011/09/quote-from-elder-bernard-p-brockbank.html' title='A Quote from Elder Bernard P. Neal L Anderson in the April 2010 conference said: “The stories of Jesus can be like a rushing wind across the embers of faith in the hearts of our children.”“Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life.’ The stories of Jesus shared over and over bring faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and strength to the foundation of testimony. Can you think of a more valuable gift for our children?”This applies to adults as well. We all need to ponder and read the stories of Jesus. The Son of God came to earth and we have a record of his life. We need to study his life. I absolutely love the following video produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It takes another Apostles words Todd D Christofferson and gives them greater context. (Switzerlands Birthday) Even though the day of our wedding was a wonderful celebration of our marriage, and the sealing in particular was that crowning outward ordinance to solidify our union forever. I didn't feel the unity we needed to establish. I remember returning to the temple a few weeks after our wedding and being touch more deeply by the spirit then I did the day of our wedding. The spirit spoke confidence to my heart concerning our sealing, as we participated in proxy sealings. The outward ordinance of our sealing found an inward place in my heart and mind. Participating in proxy work in the temple fortified my faith in our relationship. The spirit fortified our sealing as we attended the temple. I now feel much more united to Monica than I did the day we were sealed, and I know it is in part because of our subsequent visits to the temple. It also helps to love, serve with, and help each other. Be humble, endure, and overcome the enmity that the advesary endevours to sow. It seams like the advesary is always trying to create division, and too often he does, but I have found that as we are merciful, fogiving and committed to each other and willing do endure all things for one another we always have been able to work things out, and establish that unity again, and over time it has gotten stronger.

The Book of Mormon

Mormon Messages recently came out with this video! As I have been reflecting upon the value of the Book of Mormon in our society today I have been drawn to it's messages specifically applicable to the family. The Book of Mormon teaches families how they should get along. It serves in so many ways to strengthen relationships. Last Sunday I received an inspired thought about an event in the Book of Mormon. Just after Nephi was commanded to build a ship, his brothers murmured against him, and said that he could not do it. Nephi counseled his brothers to not murmur and not to withhold their labor from him the work, for he had been commanded to build a ship. As I thought about this it reminded me of simple things our family members may ask us to do. We should help them with their work just as Nephi counseled his brothers to help him. We should also not withhold our labor from the work of the Lord.

Is Deception ever Justifiable? What does pure knowledge mean?

The first question is simply answered by the following scriptures. D&C 42:21 Thou shalt not lie; he that lieth and will not repent shall be cast out.Either 3:12 Thou art a God of truth and canst not lie.Liars inherit telestial glory, D&C 76:81, 103–106Evil men shall deceive and be deceived, 2 Tim. 3:13Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil, Isa. 5:20 (2 Ne. 15:20).The following is the definition of guile according to the Latter Day Saint topical guide: "In the scriptures, guile is deceitful cunning".Blessed is the man in whose spirit there is no guile, Ps. 32:2 (Ps. 34:13; 1 Pet. 2:1).Nathanael was an Israelite in whom there was no guile, John 1:47 (D&C 41:9–11).This scripture was an invitation to me and brought particular peace to me when confronted with a difficult situation that required me to reach deeper inside myself for greater honesty. "Kindness and Pure knowledge enlarges the soul without guile" (D&C 121:42). I have found inner peace come to me as I have strived to follow this scripture. It is especially important in fortifying relationships. I like the following scripture because it teaches us that even if another person is taking advantage of us in a certain way we still have the obligation to be honest with them. We are still required to turn the other cheek. D&C 10:28 Verily, verily, I say unto you, wo be unto him that lieth to deceive because he supposeth that another lieth to deceive, for such are not exempt from the justice of God.The last scripture shows us that we can have full trust in any messenger from heaven for there is no deception in a heavenly being. God does not deceive and neither do any of his angels or his true servants for that matter. He will at times withhold an answer we are seeking, or withhold knowledge as to try our souls, but will never cause us to be lead us astray.D&C 129:7 Ask him to shake hands with you, but he will not move, because it is contrary to the order of heaven for a just man to deceive; but he will still deliver his message.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nathancorry.blogspot.com/2011/04/is-deception-ever-justifiable-what-does.html' title='Is Deception ever Justifiable? In Moses 6:53 Adam asks the Lord "Why is it that men must repent and be baptized in water? The lord then said to Adam that he had been forgiven of his transgression in the Garden of Eden. Moses 6:54 is an interesting response by the people. Then in 55-57 "The lord spake unto Adam saying: Inasmuch as thy children are conceived in sin, even so when they begin to grow up, sin conceiveth in their hearts, and they taste the bitter, that they may know to prize the good. And it is given unto them to know good from evil; wherefore they are agents unto themselves, and I have given unto you another law and commandment. Wherefore teach it unto your children, that all men, everywhere, must repent, or they can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God, for no unclean thing can dwell there, or dwell in his presence"I find it interesting that even from our conception we have been born in sin, and that because of this sin conceiveth in our hearts. By this we are then made to taste the bitter, so we know to prize the good. It is given unto us to know good from evil, and being agents unto ourselves he has given us a commandment that we might choose to repent and come unto him. As references below we also have other scripture in the Doctrine and covenants that references a set age of accountability, but it seams evident from these scriptures that from the onset of life every child, though innocent until the age of accountability, experiences good and evil, as it is conceived in their hearts and is given that experience to learn and prepare them sufficiently to repent and obey Gods commandments. I think the phrase included in these verses "when they begin to grow up" is also indicative of the accountability aspect. In verses 58-59 The Lord commands Adam "to teach these things freely unto your (his) children, saying: That by reason of transgression cometh the fall, which fall bringeth death, and inasmuch as ye were born into the world by water, and blood, and the spirit, which I have made, and so became of dust a living soul, even so ye must be born again into the kingdom of heaven of water, and of the Spirit, and be cleansed by blood, even the blood of mine Only Begotten; that ye might be sanctified from all sin, and enjoy the words of eternal life in this world, and eternal life in the world to come, even immortal glory; For by the water ye keep the commandment; by the Spirit ye are justified, and by the blood ye are sanctified; Therefore it is given to abide in you; the record of heaven; the Comforter; the peaceable things of immortal glory; the truth of all things; that which quickeneth all things, which maketh alive all things; that which knoweth all things, and hath all power according to wisdom, mercy, truth, justice, and judgment. And now, behold, I say unto you: This is the plan of salvation unto all men, through the blood of mine Only Begotten, who shall come in the meridian of time."To sum it up we have a responsibility to freely teach these things unto our children, that they might have faith in Jesus Christ unto repentance and inherit the promised blessings of eternal life and immortal glory. This is the plan of salvation. It's my testimony that the Lord loves us enough to help us as we put our best foot forward, but I also believe he expects us to be diligent in our efforts to obey these commandments.Reference ScripturesD&C 93:38 Every spirit of man was innocent in the beginning; and God having redeemed man from the fall, men became again, in their infant state, innocent before God.D&C 93:39 And that wicked one cometh and taketh away light and truth, through disobedience, from the children of men, and because of the tradition of their fathers.D&C 93:40 But I have commanded you to bring up your children in blight and truth.D&C 68:25 And again, inasmuch as parents have children in Zion, or in any of her stakes which are organized, that teach them not to understand the doctrine of repentance, faith in Christ the Son of the living God, and of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of the hands, when eight years old, the sin be upon the heads of the parents.D&C 18:42For all men must repent and be baptized, and not only men, but women, and children who have arrived at the years of accountability.

Blessings of Tithing!

I have recently finished reading a talk given in General Conference by Elder Lynn G. Robinson. It was about tithing one particular example that I liked was in his reference to Elijah's experience with the widow of Zarephath. During a time when people were starving to death, and this widow thought herself and her son to die because of a lack of food, Elijah commanded her to give to him. Elijah stood as the Lords servant and gives us a perfect example how tithing should be asked for and given in the church. The lord asks us to pay him first and extends promised blessings as we obey. I have also noted that as we obey we have claim on the lord through prayer. Our faith is increased as we obey and our prayers are ever more sincere and are heard. Elder Robinson also gave the following example. One reason why "the Lord illustrates doctrines with the most extreme circumstances is to eliminate excuses. If the Lord expects even the poorest widow to pay her mite, where does that leave all others who find that it is not convenient or easy to sacrifice?" "No bishop, no missionary should ever hesitate or lack the faith to teach the law of tithing to the poor. The sentiment of “They can’t afford to” needs to be replaced with “They can’t afford not to.""In October of 1998 Hurricane Mitch devastated many parts of Central America. President Gordon B. Hinckley was very concerned for the victims of this disaster, many of whom lost everything—food, clothing, and household goods. He visited the Saints in the cities of San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa, Honduras; and Managua, Nicaragua. And like the words of the loving prophet Elijah to a starving widow, this modern prophet’s message in each city was similar—to sacrifice and be obedient to the law of tithing. But how can you ask someone so destitute to sacrifice? President Hinckley knew that the food and clothing shipments they received would help them survive the crisis, but his concern and love for them went far beyond that. As important as humanitarian aid is, he knew that the most important assistance comes from God, not from man. The prophet wanted to help them unlock the windows of heaven as promised by the Lord in the book of Malachi (see Mal. 3:10; Mosiah 2:24).President Hinckley taught them that if they would pay their tithing, they would always have food on their tables, they would always have clothing on their backs, and they would always have a roof over their heads."ReferencesRobinson, Lynn G. I also have a testimony of Christ and trust that he will reward all those who obey and keep his commandments. As Moroni testified we must be humble, patient, and full of love. We have great reason to live our lives with sincerity and purpose each and every day. We are always invited to improve ours and others lives. This season is a great opportunity to do so. Lets be about serving one another, and spreading happiness, joy, and the peace of Christ.

Dissonance and Benjamin Franklin

Once in a while I enjoy reading a good Wikipedia Article and I recently found one that has sparked my interest, and it related the following story given by Benjamin Franklin."I did not ... aim at gaining his favour by paying any servile respect to him but, after some time, took this other method. Having heard that he had in his library a certain very scarce and curious book, I wrote a note to him, expressing my desire of perusing that book, and requesting he would do me the favour of lending it to me for a few days. He sent it immediately, and I return'd it in about a week with another note, expressing strongly my sense of the favour. When we next met in the House, he spoke to me (which he had never done before), and with great civility; and he ever after manifested a readiness to serve me on all occasions, so that we became great friends, and our friendship continued to his death. This is another instance of the truth of an old maxim I had learned, which says, "He that has once done you a kindness will be more ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged" (1)."Cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling caused by holding conflicting ideas simultaneously. The theory of cognitive dissonance proposes that people have a motivational drive to reduce dissonance. They do this by changing their attitudes, beliefs, and actions. Dissonance is also reduced by justifying, blaming, and denying. It is one of the most influential and extensively studied theories in social psychology" (1).I remember attending an Institute class in Cedar City with Brother Brent Esplin. He spoke to us about dissonance. I had never heard of dissonance before, but I new that he was speaking to me, because he described some of my feelings. Since then I have learned that people experience dissonance at different levels, and for a variety of reasons. Mostly when behavior isn't congruent with desired behavior, as in Alma's case he experience dissonance when he suffered anxiety even unto pain; because he desired so greatly for change in his beloved brethren (Alma 13:27). I really like the example given by Benjamin Franklin because it shows us a great example of how we can act to bring out the best in other people. The article is really good and I think it could benefit many other people. References1. Cognitive dissonance. (2010, November 28). In Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. Such a confidence booster, and yet it still drives home the important goal to improve. As I have pondered about this statement I have come to realize that in general we are far to critical of ourselves, and our progress, and we still need to continue to improve. Married couples are tried by temptation, misunderstandings, separation, financial problems, family crises, illness; and all the while love grows stronger, the mature love enjoys a bliss not even imagined by newlyweds".

Monica gave a wonderful F.H.E. lesson this past week, and we read that quote. It really stood out to me, because it just goes to show you that love in marriage is something that is built over time, and it's how a couple handle problems that determines how their love grows. In our F.H.E. I thought of how this quote relates to people who are not married. I'm sure many of the relationships people develop before marriage come to an end because individuals lack this mature love, and commitment to overcome difficulties that present themselves. Many individuals especially perfectionists, take no thought but to end a relationship over a trivial imperfection, and many easily justify their position. I know mature love doesn't exit when an issue presents itself. We must all choose to love, and it is a choice to commit and build each others life. I am not saying there are no justifiable reasons why some people don't get married, but if a person really expects to go the distance it is going to involve mature committed love.

Unto whom much is given much is required! (D&C 82:3)

I recently read an Ensign article by Elder David A. Bednar and was impressed with the following doctrine. We know that “God has reserved spirits for this dispensation who have the courage and determination to face the world, and all the powers of the evil one, visible and invisible, to proclaim the gospel and maintain the truth and establish and build up the Zion of our God fearless of all consequences. He has sent these spirits in this generation to lay the foundation of Zion never more to be overthrown, and to raise up a seed that will be righteous, and that will honor God, and honor Him supremely, and be obedient to Him under all circumstances.” - President George Q. Cannon. In connection with President Cannon's words Elder Bednar quoted Elder Neal A. Maxwell who said “The youth of this generation have a greater capacity for obedience than any previous generation.” Elder Bednar then quoted D&C 82:3 which states that "Unto whom much is given; much is required".
As I have thought about the previous doctrinal teachings I have felt grateful for my forefathers who laid the foundation upon which we build. We would not be, nor would we enjoy what we have today if it weren't for them. We truly have been given much, even more that any previous generation. We have received more because of the foundation laid by the previous generations. No doubt we owe much of what we have today to them. I am grateful for the power which has been invested in us. We are enabled today with a greater capacity for obedience in part because of our forefathers, and in part because of our previous obedience. I hope we may all speedily obey, and keep the commandments of God with a cheerful attitude. I have recently recognized a great blessing as I have enthusiastically chosen to be positive about life, and in my relationships with others. God wants us to keep his commandments with enthusiasm.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nathancorry.blogspot.com/2010/08/unto-whom-much-is-given-much-is.html' title='Unto whom much is given much is required! We were not sent here to become subject to the devil in any degree of unrighteousness.

A scriptural story in the Book of Mormon describes very well what can happen when a person compromises with evil. Alma 47:6-18

6 And they had appointed a man to be a king and a leader over them, being fixed in their minds with a determined resolution that they would not be subjected to go against the Nephites.

7 And it came to pass that they had gathered themselves together upon the top of the mount which was called Antipas, in preparation to battle.

8 Now it was not Amalickiah’s intention to give them battle according to the commandments of the king; but behold, it was his intention to gain favor with the armies of the Lamanites, that he might place himself at their head and dethrone the king and take possession of the kingdom.

9 And behold, it came to pass that he caused his army to pitch their tents in the valley which was near the mount Antipas.

10 And it came to pass that when it was night he sent a secret embassy into the mount Antipas, desiring that the leader of those who were upon the mount, whose name was Lehonti, that he should come down to the foot of the mount, for he desired to speak with him.

11 And it came to pass that when Lehonti received the message he durst not go down to the foot of the mount. And it came to pass that Amalickiah sent again the second time, desiring him to come down. And it came to pass that Lehonti would not; and he sent again the third time.

12 And it came to pass that when Amalickiah found that he could not get Lehonti to come down off from the mount, he went up into the mount, nearly to Lehonti’s camp; and he sent again the fourth time his message unto Lehonti, desiring that he would come down, and that he would bring his guards with him.

13 And it came to pass that when Lehonti had come down with his guards to Amalickiah, that Amalickiah desired him to come down with his army in the night-time, and surround those men in their camps over whom the king had given him command, and that he would deliver them up into Lehonti’s hands, if he would make him (Amalickiah) a second leader over the whole army.

14 And it came to pass that Lehonti came down with his men and surrounded the men of Amalickiah, so that before they awoke at the dawn of day they were surrounded by the armies of Lehonti.

15 And it came to pass that when they saw that they were surrounded, they plead with Amalickiah that he would suffer them to fall in with their brethren, that they might not be destroyed. Now this was the very thing which Amalickiah desired.

16 And it came to pass that he delivered his men, contrary to the commands of the king. Now this was the thing that Amalickiah desired, that he might accomplish his designs in dethroning the king.

17 Now it was the custom among the Lamanites, if their chief leader was killed, to appoint the second leader to be their chief leader.

18 And it came to pass that Amalickiah caused that one of his servants should administer poison by degrees to Lehonti, that he died.

It is a sad thing, but many good people confuse the Lords "no allowance for for sin in the least degree" for a no tolerance for people policy.
Because some groups of people don't live up to the expectations others hold for themselves, sometimes these other people discriminate and refuse to love their neighbor. This confusion can and has often breed malice, enmity, and hatred for a neighbor.

Elder Ballard speaking about Tolerance said:

If we are truly disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, we will reach out with love and understanding to all of our neighbors at all times. 1
"Perceptions and assumptions can be very dangerous and unfair. There are some of our members who may fail to reach out with friendly smiles, warm handshakes, and loving service to all of their neighbors. At the same time, there may be those who move into our neighborhoods who are not of our faith who come with negative preconceptions about the Church and its members. Surely good neighbors should put forth every effort to understand each other and to be kind to one another regardless of religion, nationality, race, or culture." 1

President Hinckley said:

“… We must work harder to build mutual respect, an attitude of forbearance, with tolerance one for another regardless of the doctrines and philosophies which we may espouse. Concerning these you and I may disagree. But we can do so with respect and civility”. 2
Elder Ballard said:

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we understand that we are perceived by some to be “a peculiar people” (1 Pet. 2:9). Our doctrines and beliefs are important to us. We embrace them and cherish them. I am not suggesting for a moment that we shouldn’t. On the contrary, our peculiarity and the uniqueness of the message of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ are indispensable elements in offering the people of the world a clear choice. Neither am I suggesting that we should associate in any relationship that would place us or our families at spiritual risk. We must understand, however, that not everyone is going to accept our doctrine of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. For the most part, our neighbors not of our faith are good, honorable people—every bit as good and honorable as we strive to be. They care about their families, just like we do. They want to make the world a better place, just like we do. They are kind and loving and generous and faithful, just like we seek to be. Nearly 25 years ago, the First Presidency declared: “Our message … is one of special love and concern for the eternal welfare of all men and women, regardless of religious belief, race, or nationality, knowing that we are truly brothers and sisters because we are sons and daughters of the same Eternal Father” (First Presidency statement, 15 Feb. 1978). That is our doctrine—a doctrine of inclusion. That is what we believe. That is what we have been taught. Of all people on this earth, we should be the most loving, the kindest, and the most tolerant because of that doctrine. 1

I really have enjoyed studying this topic, because it is one I believe I could be better at.

This last quote goes very well with the top middle of the preceding quote where Elder Ballard mentioned that we not associate with any relationship that would put our family's at spiritual risk.

Ezra Taft Benson said:

“Tolerance is a word valuable in the service of Satan. Alexander Pope warned 200 years ago that:
“ ‘Vice is a monster of so frightful mien
As to be hated needs but to be seen;
Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face,
We first endure, then pity, then embrace.’
“An Essay on Man.” 3

This oft quoted poem in general conference points out an important truth, we are all human. It is important that we always remember Christ and his commandments so we don't drift away from Him. I believe that is one reason we have been commanded to pray, study the scriptures and attend the temple regularly, if we aren't attentive to do those things we may miss some vital instructions.

3 Nephi 12:13 Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the salt of the earth; but if the salt shall lose its savor wherewith shall the earth be salted? The salt shall be thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot of men.

Moroni 10: 32-33 Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.

And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy, without spot.

1 M. I feel I can safely say that the book of Mormon has had the greatest impact on my life than any other book. As I have studied that book; it's words and the spirit have helped me repent when I have needed the conviction to do so, and it has brought peace and comfort to my soul when I have been distressed, It has also given me the confidence that I have needed to continue on doing my best without fear during times when I have felt week or depressed.
I was reading in 2 Nephi 2:13 the other day and came across this point, that without righteousness there is no happiness. Wickedness may be-able to give someone momentary pleasure, physical or carnal satisfaction, but wickedness will never bring happiness, peace, joy, and anything that will be remembered as good. Isaiah stated: "there is no peace, saith the Lord unto the wicked". (Isaiah 48:22) Alma counseled his son Corianton: "Wickedness never was happiness" (Alma 41:10)
I read this scripture recently and I find it truly relevant to our day "Wo unto them that call evil good, and good evil, that put darkness for light, and light for darkness, that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" (2 Nephi 15:20) The gospel is a truly simple plan, but sometimes we allow the impressions of the world, and selfish desires, to cloud our judgment, and we are not sensitive to the little evidences of truth that are trying to show us, to correct us, and guide us to a better way to live. The truly happy way of living is in accordance with God's commandments, exercising faith, repenting of sin, and doing righteousness works. I know that God is working in our lives everyday to bring us the joy and peace the gospel can give. We can not adequately measure the depth of the blessings which are given and obtained because of righteous works people do every day.

In the Name of Jesus Christ

I have recently been impressed with the principle of taking upon us the name of Christ.
Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery in the Temple and said the following in D&C 110:4 "I am the first and the last; I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father."
If Christ, our brother the perfect man, is our advocate, whom else do we need on our side.
In D&C 45:3-5 a revelation given through the prophet Joseph Smith it is written:
"Listen to him who is the advocate with the Father, who is pleading your cause before him—Saying: Father, behold the sufferings and death of him who did no sin, in whom thou wast well pleased; behold the blood of thy Son which was shed, the blood of him whom thou gavest that thyself might be glorified; Wherefore, Father, spare these my brethren that believe on my name, that they may come unto me and have everlasting life."
It is comforting to know that we have a perfect and sinless elder brother who is pleading our cause.
In Mosiah 5:8 we are commanded to take upon us the name of Christ. "There is no other name given whereby salvation cometh; therefore, I would that ye should take upon you the name of Christ..."
I am greatly humbled and feel immeasurably blessed to have this commandment.

We also pray in the name of Christ. When I think about this, that I am praying to heavenly father in Christ's name, that he is the bearer of my prayer, it makes me feel like my prayers are strengthened, and I am more apt to pray with greater sincerity and faith.
We also learn from the scriptures that it is only through Christ that we can be saved.
D&C 20:29 And we know that all men must repent and believe on the name of Jesus Christ, and worship the Father in his name, and endure in faith on his name to the end, or they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God.
I am grateful for every blessing I have received and continue to receive because of my faith in Jesus Christ.
The following scripture is a perfect example of how we address our Heavenly Father in Christ's Name.
D&C 20:77 "O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ"
I like the following scripture because it shows Christs relationship to the things we do in the Spirit.
D&C 46:31 And again, I say unto you, all things must be done in the name of Christ, whatsoever you do in the Spirit;
Without Christ we would not be able to enjoy the gift of the spirit or any good thing. When persons manifest the least kindness and love to me, O what power it has over my mind, while the opposite course has a tendency to harrow up all the harsh feelings and depress the human mind." (History of the Church 5:23-24)

As I think about the quotation I am reminded of how wonderful it feels and is; when people demonstrate kindness to me in word or deed. Truly our words have a powerful influence upon others and ourselves. Our own words can shape who we are, and other peoples perceptions of us and themselves. I hope we always find time to speak with kindness to those we love. I am grateful for the wonderful family I have. (D&C 93:40)

I was doing my scripture study today, and was impressed with these scriptures, and just really wanted to share what I saw.
D&C 93:28, 30-32, 36-40
28 "He that keepeth his commandments receiveth truth and light, until he is glorified in truth and knoweth all things."

We know that we are blessed as we keep our Heavenly Fathers commandments. No wonder we are continually invited to increase our commitment, and our obedience to the commandments. The gospel is progressive.

30 "All truth is independent in that sphere in which God has placed it, to act for itself, as all intelligence also; otherwise there is no existence.
31 "Behold, here is the agency of man, and here is the condemnation of man; because that which was from the beginning is plainly manifest unto them, and they receive not the light.
32 "And every man whose spirit receiveth not the light is under condemnation."

This is when we enter under condemnation, when we receive not that light and truth that is plainly manifested unto us.

36 "The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth.
37 "Light and truth forsake that evil one."

We must forsake the evil one, and every enticement to sin, or as Moroni put it, "Deny all ungodliness." This next part is what really got me thinking:

38 "Every spirit of man was innocent in the beginning; and God having redeemed man from the fall, men became again, in their infant state, innocent before God."

Because of the redemption of God, while infants we are innocent before God.

39 "And that wicked one cometh and taketh away light and truth, through disobedience, from the children of men, and because of the tradition of their fathers."

I found it profoundly interesting, and I really don't think I understand the implications of the point, that the wicked one "taketh away light and truth" not only because of disobedience, but also because of the traditions or our fathers. The way that we are raised gives the wicked one power to take away our light and truth, and then the Lord gives this commandment:

40 "But I have commanded you to bring up your children in light and truth."

This places a heavy responsibility upon parents to raise their children in light and truth teaching them the commandments and to obey them. Parents have the responsibility to provide for their children all of those things that they possibly can, to help them preserve and increase in their light and truth. I know that the Lord and his spirit will help us raise our children in such a manner. I am so grateful for the scriptures, and how they consistently open my eyes and help me find greater meaning in my life. I love my Savior Jesus Christ, and a Loving Heavenly Father who cares so much about everyone of us.

Adam where goest thou?

I have recently been reading a book by James L. Ferrell called The PEACEGIVER. I was actually invited by my mom to read it a while ago, but never got around to it, it was just one of those books that had been recommended as a great book, but I hadn't found the time yet. Well Monica started reading it and loved it, and she also invited me to read it, and it's really good. I was inspired as I read about an example he used in the book about sin.
Adam after partaking of the forbidden fruit and transgressing the laws of God, for God Himself commanded Adam and Eve:

"Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it, nevertheless, thou mayest choose for thyself, for it is given unto thee; but, remember that I forbid it, for in the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." (Moses 3:16-17)

Adam and Eve after partaking of the fruit, and upon hearing the voice of the Lord God sought to Hide from God in the garden. This is often the case with people when they knowingly break Gods commandments or transgress His law. However God called out to Adam saying: "Where goest thou?" (Moses 4:15) Adam then acknowledged his fear towards God saying: "I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I beheld that I was naked, and I hid myself." (Moses 4:16) God continued to ask Adam questions about his situation, transgression, and brought Adam back from his fear.

As I pondered about these scriptures I thought about the importance of home and visiting teaching. There are still people who, having gone astray from God, feel like hiding from Him. All the difference in the world may come to these individuals if we visit them as God did with Adam when he had gone astray. We can teach them the truth of God. We can teach them about his mercy and forgiveness that comes through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We know the adversary is already hard at work to confuse people, and he wields sin against them. To descourage them and drive them to despair. With loving kindness we can invite them back, and be the arm and voice of God. We can make sure that they know they need not fear Him, or Hide from him. I know that the Home and Visiting teaching programs of the Church are inspired of God, and designed to keep his sheep safely gathered in.

Securing a Firm Hope through Jesus Christ

I have often pondered about Hope, and when I do I always come away feeling better about my life. Members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are commanded and it is a qualification for those who serve in the church to have Faith Hope and Charity. (D&C 4:5)

There are people I have met in my life who are filled with hope. Those people appear to me to be outwardly and inwardly positive about their lives.

What I really want to express is that people who live their lives in accordance with their conscience usually have a hopeful attitude about life. People who's conscience has been built around the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and live their lives in accordance with it; have an eternal and greater hope that rests in the promised blessings of their obedience to the gospel. Eternal life, and a crown of glory through the atonement of Jesus Christ.

They know that they are in good standing with God and feel that their lives are justified before God and men, because of their obedience to the gospel.

They choose not to fill their lives with images of darkness, but of light. They have faith in the atonement of Jesus Christ, and recognize their dependence on him. They also have charity towards man, and love Gods children. They are hurt when others are pained, they morn with those that morn. They are happy when others are trully happy.

Their are many people in life whose conscience has not been awakened to the light of the gospel, but when it is they are forced to make a choice. The choice is to embrace it, which many times includes making changes in their lives, or to reject it and live under an awakened conscience of guilt; which leads to despair, and ultimatly great sorrow.

Our conscience is shaped by our understanding of the gospel. Our understanding of truth; things that are wrong, and the things that are right. As we learn more about the truth of our lives it is imperitive that our understanding and faith in the saviors atonement deepen and increase; without an increasing understanding of the atonement we would be miserable forever, and we could not sustain our bright hope for life and the life to come.

People will someday be brought before God to be judged, and those who have rejected the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and the truth that has been before their eyes all their lives, will then be fully awakened to a perfect conscience, but they have rejected their savior, and will not beable to escape the truth of their lives. Their will be no foundation for their hope, for their is none save Jesus Christ.

Anyway as I have pondered about these principles it is motivating for me to live the Gospel, and trust in Jesus Christ. This is my testimony about Jesus Christ. I really like what Moroni wrote in Moroni 7:16 " For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for everything which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God."

"O Lord, thou hast given us a commandment that we must call upon thee, that from thee we may receive according to our desires."

Either 3:2 "O Lord, thou hast said that we must be encompassed about by the floods. Now behold, O Lord, and do not be angry with thy servant because of his weakness before thee: for we know that thou art holy and dwellest in the heavens, and that we are unworthy before thee; because of the fall our natures have become evil continually; nevertheless, O Lord, thou hast gtiven us a commandment that we must call upon thee, that from thee we may receive according to our desires."

Before the brother of Jared offered this prayer he had been chastened by the Lord for neglecting to call upon the Lord in prayer. I believe many of us neglect the power of prayer in our lives. Monica and I recently read an article in the August Ensign by Elder Yoshihiko Kikuchi entitled "Opening the Heavens". Elder Kikuchi explains "There is great power in setting aside quiet, prayerful, meditative time, In the stillness that accompanies our pondering, we can come to know the Father and His Son."

I know in my life I have felt great power and received great peace as I have set aside time to pray. It clears away the darkness, and brings in the light.

The book of Mormon illustrates this principle over and over beginning with Lehi. In 1st Nephi 1, Lehi hear's prophets prophesy that the people must repent or Jerusalem would be destroyed. Lehi then goes and prays in behalf of his people with all his heart. The Lord hears his prayer, and gives Lehi understanding, and he quakes and trembles because of it. He later receives further understanding as he ponders about that which he was given.

2 Nephi 32:4 "Wherefore, now after I have spoken these words, if ye cannot understand them it will be because ye ask not neither do ye knock; wherefore, ye are not brought into the light, but must perish in the dark."

My thoughts and some that have become mine.

The other day I was pondering Isaiah 55:8-9: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." For a second I thought to my self that our thoughts are hopelessly lower then his thoughts, but then I remembered and corrected that idea. Our thoughts are not hopelessly lower then his thoughts; because of Jesus Christ we have hope that one day we will be like him. Inasmuch as we continue to repent for our lower thoughts and ideas and continue to accept his higher thoughts we will progress and come closer to him until one day we are even as he is. 3 Nephi 27:20 reads: "Now this is the commandment Repent, all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me and be baptized in my name, that ye may be sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand spotless before me at the last day." The command to repent is for everyone, "for all have sinned" (Rom 3:23)
King Benjamin petitioned us specifically to "watch yourselves in your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds" (Mosiah 4:30) I believe that he ment it in that order too. Deeds being the weightier matter, your words next, and then your thoughts. Some one may think about helping somebody others may talk about it and there are those who just do it. Their are plenty of reasons people give to avoid giving meaningful service to someone else. One of the first is that they are too busy or their isn't enough time. That one has crossed my mind way to many times. I am trying to become somebody who just does it and makes the time.

About thoughts specifically I wanted to say that people change over time, and obsessing about thoughts is not the answer. There are way too many people who freak out about some crazy thought or idea that popped into their head, at a questionable time or moment. I never want to give those thoughts any weight. Those are the firey darts of the advesary. And are sent to inspire doubt, in oneself. Our thoughts are naturual concequences of our daily lives, and as we fill our daily lives with good, wholesome, and productive activities; our thoughts will naturally improve without an obsessive nature about them. God does not work with obsessions, the Advesary does. It's a sure sign you can tell if thoughts are of the advesary.

Moroni says the following, speaking about posessing the gift of charity, in Moroni 7:48: "Where fore, my beloved brethren, pray unto the Fother with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ; that ye may become the sons of God; that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is; that we may have this hope; that we may be purified even as he is pure. Amen."

I really enjoy reading Moroni chapter 7; mostly because of it's emphasis on Hope. In this world we have today it is easy for the advesary to get his hand in our lives to try and erode our hope. In a world of uncertainty Moroni clarifies very well the future that we have hope for; only because of Jesus Christ. I am most grateful for the hope we have for a glorious future. I am especially grateful for the hope that has been instilled in Monica and I because of our baptismal covenants, the oath and covenant of the priesthood, and our temple covenants. Specifically the promises which have been made to us if we are faithful to our covenants.

Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance

This past week I have learned some valuable lessons in preparation and planning. I have learned that by planning your day you automatically eliminate various forms of confusion. It eliminates confusion about your direction throughout the day. Planing brings a couple closer together, it helps your relationship, by eliminating confusion about each others goals for the day. By planing you will work as one with your companion rather then heading off in different directions here and their, throughout the day. Planning helps you get things done, but it also invites unity within your home and family. People take ownership for tasks they discuss and plan to do. I know I always felt better about the tasks I did growing up, when I talked about doing them in a planning meeting as a family rather then when they came upon me as a surprise.

These are just a few quotes that I have heard about planning. Just some random Thoughts.

Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance

It is better to prepare and prevent rather then repair and repent.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

If ye are prepared ye shall not fear. These are some principles that I had difficulty placing faith in because I didn't understand them or trully believe in them at the time.

Paul counseled members of the church in Ephesus to take upon them the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. (Ephesians 6:16) I have pondered a great deal about faith in recent years. It has been aparent in my life that when I do not entertain doubts, and fears, and do not quibble over things of naught (2 Nephi 27:32), or things which are irrelivant. When I focus on what I can build in my situation, rather then what is wrong or not ideal with it, I am considerably happier. This is what I believe is taking upon us the sheild of faith, and everything sent to distract us from obtaining our goal and excersising our faith may be defined as a fiery dart of the adversary.

I have seen the fiery darts of the adversary prove effective in my life from time to time; because out of fear or self righteousness I quit pursuing a worthy choice that was before me, and that the Lord would have supported me in. I saw this many times when I was pursuing a celestial marriage, if there is anything that the adversary will fight against, it is against a celestial marriage. I remember when I was dating some of Heavenly Father's choice young women. For one reason or another I failed to follow through in my commitment, and I would back out of the relationship. Some hearts were hurt, and it goes both ways. People often say people who do this have commitment issues, and they are absolutely right. Now I will add that I do believe in certain situations the Lord will give you a definite "no" answer concerning a particular individual you might like to date seriously. The Lord may even warn you not to go out with a person at all, but such answer will come very clearly. For the most part the Lord will say yes so long as the person is worthy, and you are interested. If there is one thing that I have learned it is that the Lord works with his children according to their desires.

There were several young woman who I dated before I met Monica for whom I felt the Lord's approval. There are various reasons why those relationships didn't end in marriage. I can see now that all of those reasons were based upon my faith in the fiery darts that the adversary sent out to throw me off course, and he succeeded in those cases. Lucky for me I didn't give up and I finally made sense of the dating world with all my commitment to Monica, whom I cleave to with all my heart. However during our courtship I still faced some of those same fiery darts that had nailed me before, and a few new tactics that I hadn't seen before, but my commitment was sure and I outlasted my fears and weaknesses; which led us to a temple sealing with eternal promises and blessings.

This is a list of some of the ways the adversary used to through my commitment out the window when I was dating. Maybe you have seen some similar tactics:

He will try to give you reasons to judge the individual, perhaps get you to assume things about them that aren't even real. Perhaps get you to doubt their motives, intentions, and commitment.

He will try to deceive you into thinking they don't quite measure up, expecially if they had a bad day. We all have bad days, and if they are worthy trust me they do measure up.

He will try to bring out and emphasize your differences in personality and passion for life. He will try to work with misunderstanding.

He will try to make it appear you have some serious competition with another guy or girl, and will try to get you on edge, or give up because of it, drowning out your hope.

He will attack your own character by deceivingly convincing you that you don't measure up.

He will try to convince you that you don't love them enough, and wouldn't be able to make them happy, that you can't love them enough.

He will try to get you to doubt your pure and true motives.

He will try to convince you that you are not worthy.

He will try to make little things seam huge.

He will try to make the grass look greener on the other side, rather then see what you can build with what you have.

I'm sure there are many more tactics out there, these are just a few I have seen. All of these items are the based on fears, unrighteousness, and doubt. They deter love, righteousness and faith. It takes commitment and faith to get through the clouds of doubt and despair.

The Sheild of Faith is something we have to lift up throughout our lives. Recently there were a few things on my mind that were dragging my mood down, and I had difficulty not worrying about them. You can always tell if it is the adversary because he works in overwhelming feelings and obsessive thought patterns. I talked to Monica about them, several times, and I always felt better. I went to my priesthood leader for guidance. I also sought the Lord in prayer with a commitment to faith and I was comforted. I always felt better when I wasn't worrying about the issues, but couldn't seem to shake them entirely over time, but I still commited myself to faith, and kept going. I was given a blessing and discussed them with my priesthood leader and received a blessing. My mind is settled now in my commitment to faith and those issues which bothered me have taken a back seat and I don't worry about them anymore. I have since then seen the adversary try to direct me toward a different detour on my course. It seams he never lets up, but I am commited to take upon myself the sheild of faith and am a lot happier because of that.

The New and Everlasting Covenant of Marriage

Monica inspired me to write about marriage. It has been a little while since I posted anything, and we have recently been involved in marriage stuff. This past week Monica's best friend Juleen Kay (Memmott) now Monson was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. It was wonderful to witness the sealing in the temple. Juleen married Tom Monson, and the sealer was President Thomas S. Monson, the presiding high priest of the church not to mention Prophet Seer and Revelator. To say the least it was very inspirational.
President Monson started out by telling a few stories, and putting the audience at ease. He didn't rush the sealing at all, but he did keep it sacred. One story he told was about members of the church behind the Iron Curtain in East Germany who wanted to attend the temple, but couldn't because they would need permision to pass into another country. Well at that time some church authorities spoke with the government about allowing some members to attend the temple and promised that they would all return to east Germany. The government gave permission and they were astounded at the fact that all those who left their borders returned, and kept their promise. President Monson then turned and said: "I like people who keep their promises". He told a few other stories and talked a little about the Salt Lake Temple. It was all very good.

Being sealed in the Temple is unlike any other marriage we find in the world, it is eternal. Being sealed in the temple and recieving the New and Everlasting Covenant includes with it a more thourough and everlasting commitment then any other promise, and with that commitment comes a greater, thourough, and everlasting love.

The gospel never ceases to amaze me. The blessings and promises that the Lord has for those who want them are amazing. Heavenly father truly has a mansion prepared for every one who will receive one, and he only asks us now to live a minimal standard to enter the temple and to be sealed.

I recently relearned from a gospel doctrine lesson about the Kingdoms of Glory, and in that lesson it talks about the three degrees of glory; the telestial, the terrestrial, and the celestial. In D&C 131:1-4 it says "In the celestial glory there are three heavens or degrees; and in order to obtain the highest, a man must enter into this order of the priesthood [meaning the new and everlasting covenant of marrage]; and if he does not he cannot obtain it. He may enter into the other, but that is the end of his kingdom; he cannot have an increase."

In the lesson it is mentioned that each of us will inherit a kingdom of glory based on the manner in which we have "received the testimony of Jesus" (D&C 76:51) and aside from obedience to the comandments and ordinances of the gospel to inherit the celestial kingdom one must be valiant in their testimony of Jesus. Every time we think of fulfilling our callings and responsibilities we have to Christ, our families, and our neighbors, I hope we remember that we must be valiant.

I would also like to mention that God is gracious, and loves all his children, and has said that those who didn't have the opportunity in this life, but would have recieved the gospel with all their hearts will be heirs of the celestial kingdom. He has provided the way for all his children. I love the scripture that says those who believe and endure to the end shall be saved.

Commitment, Love, and Loyalty

Monica recently got me some CD's about the life of Joseph Smith, and they have been great. I have been able to reflect about some of the things that Joseph Smith has done. One particular event was about the Love and Commitment Joseph had to the saints.
Joseph had a unique trust and confidence in other people. Some people say that he wasn't a good judge of Character; because many of the people closest to him turned away, and even put up violent opposition to his future endeavors. I disagree however. People who were close to Jesus Christ during his mortal ministry turned away as well. Judas being one of the twelve.
Joseph allowed, confided in, and gave other people the agency and opportunity to build the kingdom of God. I believe the Savior has a similar trust and confidence in us. He gave and gives to each of us similar agency. Joseph Smith believed in and trusted his people, whole heartedly. This characteristic made him that much more a true leader.
In a letter to the saints he expressed his sincere and full confidence in them, and the fact was he truly held to that confidence. More then once he expressed his faith and commitment to his people that he would die for them. I suppose for the same reason of trust and commitment when he faced the decision to flee and preserve his life or return to his people and be arrested, and I believe that he knew he would die, after all he said he was going "like a lamb to the slaughter." Even though he could have fled and lived, he knew his people needed him at that time, lest they should judge him for running away. He was committed to the saints, and assured them with his life that he was committed to them and the cause.
Commitment I believe is the foundation of love. Joseph Smith loved the saints so very much, and he did everything in his power to strengthen them and lead them to God. I really think that is the mark of a true leader. They are committed to the fold. Like the good Shepard is to the sheep.
Sometimes I think about how much better this world would be if people would trust and believe in each other. If people were committed to each other. If people loved each other that much more. No doubt if trust and commitment were emphasized in our world this alone would change the world.

What is that to thee?

I have been immensely impressed by the verses in the last chapter of John. Here we have Peter the leader of the twelve, the man chosen by God to lead his people and kingdom on the earth.
Peter was probably more rebuked by the savior then of the other apostles. The Lord knew Peter's role and who He needed Peter to be. The chapter shares with us some insights of the distinct role of Peter's mission.
First I find it interesting that it points out that while seven disciples were gathered together. Peter decided to go fishing. So they all went and caught nothing. After they had caught nothing Jesus was standing on the shore and told them to cast their nets on the right side of the boat, and the nets were filled. This just gives us a testimony that we should follow the savior and do his work, and know all things are in his hands. He can cause our nets to be filled.
Second I really love the symbolism Christ used, to send them a message, as they came to shore. He had a table ready with fish, and he asked them to bring the fish ashore, then after they had eaten He said to Peter. "lovest thou me more than these?" When Peter responded yes Lord, Christ said "Feed my lambs". This pattern is repeated three times. I really like these verses because it teaches us to do the work of the Lord before or rather then our own work.
Later in the same section I have been so humbled to see Peter's mission contrasted against Johns. When Christ said: "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. And the next verse says. "This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God." I believe that Peter knew he was to die for the Lord, and that wasn't a pleasant picture at the time for him. Then Christ added those familiar words. "Follow me."
It's sobering and humbling thing for us to realize that sometimes we are asked to do things that we don't want to do. I really like the next few scriptures. Peter looks over at John and asks the following question."Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me."
From these scriptures we can see clearly that Peter and John had very different missions. Peter's mission was to end as a Martyr, and John included translation and living until the savior comes again. The words the savior spoke to Peter "What is that to thee?" give me a greater sense of humility as I go forward and strive to follow the savior and do the things he has given me to do. We all have different missions in life and the Lord calls each of us to follow him and fulfill our special missions on earth. We are not asked to do things that are beyond our capacities, but we will certainly be challenged.

The Priesthood is given to black and white bond and free

I have been doing some research on Elijah Abel, he was a free black man in 1832 when he was baptized a member of the church. Elijah also received ordinances in the Kirtland Temple, and had been baptized as a proxy for the dead in Nauvoo, held an office in the quorum of seventy, and came across the plains. Elijah’s son, Enoch Able, was ordained an Elder in 1900. Elijah’s grandson was later ordained a priest, and a year later as an Elder. Jane Manning James, a faithful black Mormon, was given a special sealing in the temple to Joseph Smith Jr. in 1902. Walker Lewis was a black man in 1942 who was also ordained to the office of an Elder. What does all of this mean you ask?

Well today during Elders Quorum an African American man told us of his struggle to accept that the church denied blacks the right to the priesthood until 1979. Anyway, I had heard that a black man was ordained to the priesthood during the days of Joseph Smith, and I wanted to find out more about it. It appears to me that Joseph Smith knew from the beginning that he was to restore the fullness of the Gospel to all people not withstanding race. As the scripture says in 2nd Nephi 26:33 “For none of these iniquities come of the Lord; for he doeth that which is good among the children of men; and he doeth nothing save it be plain unto the children of men; and he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile.”

Joseph Smith was called to restore the fullness of the gospel, and how could he have fulfilled that if it wasn’t unto all people?

At the same time there was great controversy in the United States about giving rights to blacks or African Americans. Many people had biased opinions, and it proposed a problem in many instances. People didn't believe that whites and blacks were equal. Joseph Smith stated that "blacks have souls (contrary to a common belief [back in the time of slavory]) and are a product of their environment. Given an equal environment they would be on the same level as whites." In Missouri there was a controversial editorial in the church's Evening and Morning Star titled "Free People of Color". It outlines procedures for the migration of free blacks to Missouri, a slave state. It sparked anti-Mormon violence and helped lead to the church's eventual expulsion from the state. Also that year, LDS founder Joseph Smith receives a revelation, published in the church's Doctrine & Covenants, saying, “It is not right that any man should be in bondage one to another.” All of this added fuel to the fire.

Anyway what I am getting at is that the Fullness of the Gospel was always intended for all people, but because of circumstances and biased opinions, even within the church, and considering the growth, and future growth of the church it was a commandment at the time that the church withheld the priesthood from those of the black race. Look carefully at this scripture in Jacob 5:65 which speaks of the trees of his vineyard in the last days, “And as they begin to grow ye shall clear away the branches which bring forth bitter fruit, according to the strength of the good and the size thereof; and ye shall not clear away the bad thereof all at once, lest the roots thereof should be too strong for the graft, and the graft thereof shall perish, and I lose the trees of my vineyard.”

The Lord holds his people to a standard, but it has never been a standard of perfection. His plan wasn’t to remove that bad all at once either, nor cure the people of all of their biased opinions. The scriptures were enough to do that. The Lord and his servants are working with his people to remove the bad and restore the natural or perfect fruit, but it has been a process, and has been done in God’s own time. From this scripture I have come to understand that the Lord is merciful, and works with his children and people according to their ability, acceptance, and obedience. It is my opinion that had blacks been given the priesthood at that time, the church may not have grown as it has been able to grow up until 1979. The 1860 Census lists 59 blacks in Utah; 29 of which were slaves at the time. There is no doubt but that the fullness of the Gospel was restored and was given to all men, and we are receiving it as we have been able to. This I know that Heaven will certainly be a more perfect place than we can imagine at this time, our minds are held back because of our environment, and present circumstances as were the minds of men in the early 1800's. The Church will go forward and will continue to make progress throughout time, and will prepare a people for Christ, even the natural fruit, and he will come and govern them personally upon the earth.

Marriage and More

This year has been wonderful! I have certainly had trying experiences but the outcome has been wonderful. I met Monica at a Stake FHE in either August or September of 2007, and took her out once after she spoke in Stake Conference in October that year, after that she turned me down for a second date to the Utah Chocolate Show and we both dated other people. Luckily we both broke up with those people and met again in January at another Stake FHE. She called me up later, and invited me to attend Institute with her. We spoke on the phone a few times, and after I fought off several other guys our courtship began.
After Steve got married in March it gave our relationship a little jump start and we flew to Canada where I met her family and friends. That went well, and the next step was our engagement and then our wedding in August, and now we are expecting a young child. It amazes me how much can happen in a year.
If I have anything to say about marriage is that it is ordained of God, and their is a reason God created man Male and Female. I love Monica, and we are so excited to begin our own family. Alot can happen in a year, I can surly attest to that. Through out the past few months of marrage. I have learned that Unity in Marriage requires a greater degree of Selflessness, and Service. Monica and I are happy, and I believe it is because we serve each other and take care of each others feelings. She is so very good to me. Especially when I have fears or anxieties about life it it's many situations. I know we have our kind and gracious heavenly father to thank for all we have been give.

People are worth more than their mistakes!

In D & C 18:10 it states that The worth of souls is great in the sight of god. That means that you and everyone else is important and has tremendous value to the Lord, and should to everyone else. Neal A. Maxwell in his final address, in General Conference, before leaving this mortal sphere said, "you have never seen an immortal star; they finally expire. But seated by you tonight are immortal individuals". I believe that none of us truly know our own worth, or the worth of those around us, and if we did we would act a little more Godly.
I once heard the worth of souls phrased economically. In economics something is valued at the price one is willing to pay for it. Our souls were purchased with an infinite atonement.
This brings me to my point. People make mistakes all the time, but how these mistakes are dealt with varies greatly. Some people will blow mistakes right of their shoulders, while others will make it a big deal, like the person just ruined their entire existence. Dealing with mistakes in such a way I believe can be very detrimental, and is beyond a merciful heart. Who cares if somebody spills their milk on the floor, people are worth more then spilled milk. I don't believe their is any room for criticism when it comes to spilled milk, and this could be applied to a variety of circumstances. Criticism places people in the minds of others as an attacker, of their worth.
We are told however; that we should act sharply or immediately with love and patience in correcting others when we are prompted by the Spirit, and that we aren't supposed to suffer our children to serve the devil or to fight and quarrel one with another. (Mosiah 4) When we do correct others it need to leave them with a feeling of love and appreciation. So that they don't esteem us as their enemy. (D&C 121) I believe some people may interpret this and say some thing like I love you after they have criticized another person, but it doesn't say that. It talks about the other person; they need to understand it. People, children, spouses, and everyone else need that support especially when they are being told that they have done something wrong, or that they could do better. People need to know that they are supported by you, and that you care about them. That you or other people aren't just tallying up marks as they make mistakes, and when that get enough they aren't just crossed out as a friend or their job, or whatever else you can think of. There is a great difference in the outcome if love is shown, and true care is administered. Sometimes this can be very simple, and other times it make take a greater investiment of your time and energy. They need to know you really do care about them, and their happiness. Who they are, and where they are going. They need to know about the worth of their soul. I love that.
Lucy Mack smith shortly after the death of Joseph and Hyrum said she heard the words we overcame by love.

Fortifying our Hearts with Faith and Love

This little post was inspired by Alma 28: 13. "And thus we see how great the inequality of man is because of sin and transgression, and the power of the devil, which comes by the cunning plans which he hath devised to ensnare the hearts of men." This scripture really helped me take heart several months ago, and it helped me over come some of the doubt and fear that had been smothering my happiness and peace.
I was really touched when I read Alma 28:13 because I could see how the adversary was using events, my fears, and assumptions to smother and captivate my heart. I believe he works on people in these ways and drives them to despair! He want to ensnare our hearts, and if he can obtain them through fear, or even cripple them with despair; then he will cripple us and our ability to act in faith. This can put a damper on our Joy for life, and happiness. Reading that scripture gave me courage and faith to overcome and live with greater faith. I often need reminders like that, and they always come as I study the scriptures or the talks of the brethren.
I was also very touched by the recent talk Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf gave in the first session of General Conference. It is called the Infinite Power of Hope. Every time I read that talk I feel the more comforted and blessed with a powerful hope that helps me deal with any amount of fear and despair that I may have from time to time. I feel so much better when I am filled with the hope that comes from the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

United

I have recently been studying one of the Gospel Doctrine lessons and it was referencing some of 3rd and 4th Nephi. I was enlighted as I looked at one of the paragraphs. How in the time period when there were distinctly separate peoples; they made distinctions between peoples such as the Nephites and Lamanites or Zoramites. I saw the word Un ited, and I thought how convenient it was for the word ite to be included as if it were saying we need to get rid of the ites. It has occured to me before how today so many people create divisions in our society because of race, nationality, financial wellbeing, and a hundred other reasons.
We can all work a little bit harder to clear up some of the labels we place upon other people. Our labels have a distinct way of setting a present influcence on our perceptions, and a judgmental nature towards those people we have labeled. They also skew our opinions of ourselves towards a prideful viewpoint. Lets be United instead of Ited.

Where do I begin?

I have decided to start my first blog by sharing with everyone my testimony in the Lord Jesus Christ and his Church. As I share my testimony throughout this blog I will record a description of many of the principles of the Gospel which have increased my faith in Jesus Christ. I also invite anyone who may have insight into any of these principles to so share, and comment on my blog. I know of myself that I have a very limited understanding and perspective, and hope that people will be gracious in their comments.

I was raised in a good home, and was taught the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I learned from the testimony of my parents which was given to me in great love. As my life became centered in Jesus Christ and Obedience to his commandments, I began to develop a strong and abiding testimony. "If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself." (John 7:17) An ever steady increase in adherence to the Gospel Principles has helped me gain and develop my hope and testimony.
